The Romans founded Londinium around AD 47 at a spot where the Thames could be bridged. It grew into the capital of England and, by the 19th century, the largest city in the world and the centre of a global empire.
Today London is one of the world's great centres of finance, government, culture and tourism, with more than 300 languages spoken across its 32 boroughs and the City of London.
