About Newcastle

The Romans built a bridge and fort here called Pons Aelius at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. The town is named after the "new castle" built in 1080, and it grew rich on coal - hence "taking coals to Newcastle" - and shipbuilding.

George and Robert Stephenson built pioneering locomotives here. Today the Quayside, with its row of bridges including the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, is the heart of a lively city.
