St Augustine founded the first cathedral at Canterbury in 597 after arriving as a missionary from Rome. The present building was begun in 1070 and added to over the following centuries.

Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered here in 1170, and his shrine made Canterbury one of Europe's great places of pilgrimage. It is the mother church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
