About Manchester
The Romans built a fort called Mamucium here around AD 79. In the 18th and 19th centuries Manchester became the world's first industrial city, built on cotton, and in 1830 the Liverpool and Manchester Railway became the first inter-city passenger railway.
Ernest Rutherford split the atom at the University of Manchester, and the first stored-program computer ran here in 1948. Today the city is famous for its football clubs, music and media.
