About Newport
The Roman fortress of Caerleon stands just outside Newport. In 1839 the town saw the Newport Rising, the last large armed rebellion in Britain, by the Chartists campaigning for the vote.
Its Transporter Bridge opened in 1906, Celtic Manor hosted golf's Ryder Cup in 2010, and Newport became a city in 2002.
