About Birmingham

Birmingham was a small market town granted a charter in 1166. During the Industrial Revolution it became a powerhouse of metal working and invention, earning the name "City of a Thousand Trades", and the Lunar Society of Matthew Boulton and James Watt met here.

It is now the UK's second-largest city, famous for its canal network - longer than Venice's - its food and music scenes, and for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
