About Canterbury
Canterbury was the Roman town of Durovernum Cantiacorum. St Augustine arrived in 597 and founded the cathedral, making Canterbury the birthplace of English Christianity.
Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered here in 1170, and pilgrims came from across Europe - the journey Geoffrey Chaucer described in The Canterbury Tales.
