About Leeds
Leeds grew in the Middle Ages as a market town for the Yorkshire wool trade. In the Industrial Revolution its flax and woollen mills and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal made it one of the great manufacturing towns of the north.
Marks & Spencer began as a stall in Kirkgate Market in 1884. Today Leeds is a major centre for finance, law and shopping, with grand Victorian arcades and the Royal Armouries museum.
