About Plymouth
Plymouth is where Sir Francis Drake is said to have finished his game of bowls on the Hoe before sailing against the Spanish Armada in 1588. The Mayflower Pilgrims set out from here for America in 1620.
The city was badly bombed in the Second World War and rebuilt. Devonport is one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe.
